Just a short drive or pleasant stroll from Villa RayEl, everyday conveniences are right at your fingertips. Head down Redwood Road, cross the highway, and you’ll find a shopping center with Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods Market, and a Target for any supplies you might need. Even closer is Brown’s Valley Market on Brown’s Valley Road—a charming, walkable spot with a full butcher counter, deli, and prepared meals. In the same small plaza you’ll also discover a cozy coffee shop and Hop Creek Pub, a friendly microbrewery perfect for burgers, pretzel bites, and catching a game.
For quick and delicious local bites, Genova Delicatessen is only a bit farther down Trancas Road (the continuation of Redwood after the freeway). This traditional Italian deli is known for its sandwiches, homemade pastas, and take-out lasagnas that are ideal for cooking back at the house—arrive early to avoid the lunchtime line. Right in the same plaza is Sunshine Café, a reliable breakfast spot when you prefer not to cook. Just two miles from the villa, Il Posto serves outstanding Italian pastas in a welcoming neighborhood setting; it is especially popular on weekends, so reservations are highly recommended.
A little farther north, Yountville and beyond reward visitors with even more memorable experiences. Stop at Bouchon Bakery for artisanal breads and French desserts (lines can grow longer later in the day), or enjoy Sunday brunch amid the beautiful gardens at Brix. R & D Kitchen is a favorite for its Dip Duo appetizer and carnitas sandwich, and RH Yountville pairs exceptional burrata with the chance to shop or taste wine in the adjacent outdoor garden. Continuing into Oakville, the historic Oakville Grocery serves outstanding sandwiches, wood-fired pizzas, and bakery treats from early morning until mid-afternoon, with 1881 Wine Merchants next door for tastings. In St. Helena, don’t miss Pizza Tra Vigne for some of the best artisan pizzas in the Valley, Station for excellent breakfast sandwiches, or the wonderfully old-school Napa Valley Olive Oil Company for flavored oils, balsamics, cheeses, and picnic provisions.
Wine tasting is, of course, one of Napa’s greatest pleasures, and several excellent options are practically on your doorstep. The vineyard behind the house supplies grapes to renowned producers such as Robert Mondavi, Silver Oak, Honig, CADE, Stag’s Leap, Faust, and Castello di Amorosa. Hendry Winery sits just three minutes away on Redwood Road—mention that you are staying at the villa and they may be able to accommodate you, often waiving the tasting fee with a bottle purchase. Hess Winery, a historic former Christian Brothers property, is also a quick drive up Redwood Road. Fontanella Winery on Patrick Road is another nearby gem; ask for Rachel Bowers and be sure to try their outstanding Zinfandel. If appointments are hard to secure, Honig offers a relaxed alternative: purchase a bottle and enjoy it at their first-come, first-served picnic tables with glasses provided. Farther afield, Beringer’s century-old mountain caves and Chateau Montelena (featured in the film Bottle Shock) make unforgettable visits.
Outdoor adventures begin right around the corner. Alston Park on Dry Creek Road offers three miles of meandering trails through open space with beautiful vineyard views; it is open to hikers, mountain bikers, and dog walkers. For a cooler escape on warmer days, Bothe-Napa Valley State Park between St. Helena and Calistoga features shaded trails among redwoods and pines (there is a modest entrance fee). Closer to home, a pleasant neighborhood walk leads to Century Park, with its playground, basketball court, picnic tables, and open grass areas.
If you prefer two wheels, we recommend renting bikes in downtown Napa or Yountville rather than riding the winding roads near the villa. The Vine Trail provides a scenic and enjoyable route for exploring the Valley at a leisurely pace. For a truly memorable Napa experience, consider a sunrise hot-air balloon ride with operators such as Napa Valley Aloft in Yountville or Balloons Above the Valley.
